Open Letter of Resignation from the Ohio Democratic Party
My issues are mostly with the Dems' national party and state Party, not necessarily with my own local Dem Party
13 November 2024
To the Ohio Democratic Party,
I am writing to formally resign from my positions within the Logan County Democratic Party, including my roles on both the Executive Committee and the Steering Committee. It is with a heavy heart but a clear conscience that I take this step, as my deep commitment to justice, equality, and the liberation of all people compels me to reject an institution that no longer reflects those values.
While I have dedicated years of my life to advancing progressive causes within the Democratic Party, I can no longer align myself with a political machine that consistently compromises on the issues that matter most to the working class, marginalized communities, and the future of our planet. The Party's failure to take bold and necessary action on critical issues—such as universal healthcare, the climate crisis, racial justice, trans rights, and press freedom—has left me disillusioned and unwilling to continue lending my support.
The ongoing inaction on universal healthcare is especially egregious. The party's hesitancy to push for a Medicare for All system, despite overwhelming public support, reflects its subservience to corporate interests and the health insurance industry. We are witnessing tens of thousands of people die every year because they cannot afford basic medical care, yet the Party continues to bow to the pharmaceutical lobby rather than the urgent needs of the people.
The climate crisis, an existential threat that demands nothing short of revolutionary change, is another area where the Democratic Party has failed. Instead of confronting the fossil fuel industry and enacting policies that would secure a livable future for all, the Party has chosen incrementalism and corporate-friendly solutions. The Green New Deal was a hopeful vision for a just and sustainable future, but it remains an unfulfilled promise in the face of climate denialism and corporate-backed obstruction.
Moreover, the Party's failure to enact meaningful racial justice reforms, especially in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement, reveals its reluctance to address the deep structural racism embedded in our society. The establishment's rhetoric around reform has been far too focused on incremental change, avoiding the systemic transformation needed to achieve true racial equity.
The Democratic Party's treatment of trans and gender-nonconforming people has also been appalling. Despite some progress, the Party remains largely silent in the face of increasing violence against trans people and the stripping away of trans rights at the state level. Transgender individuals deserve more than performative gestures and tokenism; they deserve full rights and protection under the law.
Lastly, the Party's complicity in the erosion of press freedom and the criminalization of whistleblowers, like Julian Assange, is another reason for my departure. A healthy democracy requires a free and independent press, yet the Party has failed to take a stand in defense of journalists and the public's right to know the truth. The silence surrounding the continued suppression of dissenting voices and independent journalism is a betrayal of the values we claim to uphold.
The above paragraphs only address domestic relations. I don’t have the space here to really address the Party’s advancement of the United States’ and their allies’ colonization and militarization.
In resigning from both the Democratic Party and its committees, I do not abandon my fight for justice and liberation. I will continue to organize, advocate, and build alongside those who are committed to creating a truly socialist future—a future in which healthcare, education, housing, and a livable planet are rights, not privileges for the wealthy few.
The Democratic Party has shown time and again that it is not the vehicle for these necessary changes. I will not continue to lend my time, energy, or legitimacy to a Party that has abandoned its moral compass in favor of corporate power and political expediency.
Thank you for the opportunities and experiences during my time within the Party. I look forward to continuing the fight for a better world, one where solidarity, justice, and dignity are the foundation of our politics.
Sincerely,
Steve Hudson
